I might be poking at a bear here but I kinda really dislike the "all or nothing" attitude the WoF fandom has. This character is evil the worst piece of garbage imaginable or is secretly a great character and you're just a fool for thinking otherwise. It's ridiculous at times
Like I recall the stuff with Secretkeeper a while back. Now, call me crazy, but I don't think she's some horrifically abusive and neglectful parent. She did the best that she could. Was it great? No, but she was trying to keep her daughter safe in a hostile world that she was terrified would reject or, worse, hunt her. Her leaving Moon alone for days was bad, yes, but she wanted to keep Moon free from the horrors of the volcano. She loved Moon and clearly took care of her a lot. You can't just look at a character and paint them as being a "horrible abusive POS" for something that, let's be real here, is much more forgivable and understandable than anything Coral, Scarlet, Diamond, Cobra, Jerboa, or Kestrel did

[Image ID: A drawing of Freedom a skinny, orange and green dragon from Wings of Fire. She is standing with one foot slightly raised with her head down and looking slightly up in anger. Her body is bright orange with dark orange stripes. She has an olive green stripe down her back and onto her head. This color also fades into all of her legs/feet . Her claws are a light grey-yellow. She has olive green half folded wings with dark olive green stripes at the ends. Her back has neon green triangular leaf-like spines. Her tail ends in a neon green leaf like fin. Her mouth is half open showing white teeth and a pale pink tongue. She has bright green eyes with a neon green slit in her pupil and dark orange spikes above her eyes. She is using green magic to grow a small plant and asking "Are you sure we can't kill everyone?" The word 'kill' is written in red and looks like it is written in blood. The background is pale green. /.End ID]
I did my favorite protag, so have my favorite antag (minus Scarlet of course because she's just the best character lol). I don't consider Freedom a 'villain' in the same way Scarlet, Darkstalker, and Blister are. Freedom definitely has done crummy stuff, but she's just an angsty child and went through a lot of trauma. She's obsessed with murder and killing and death and destruction. I love her.
This is how I imagine she looked in the mind-space where the majority of the third half of book 15 took place (not my fave thing but it was aight). She's a combo of like Rain, Leaf, Sky, and maybe some others. I saw one person call her an AncientWing and I live that. I will draw her creep/cool decomposing body with the plant too. That I wanta put a lot of time into.

you know the ha ha funny joke tui made about Mastermind doing calculus?? in guide to the dragon world? calculus was only invented in the late 1600s, which would be:
a) solidly in the renaissance (aka not medieval, as we've been led to belive), which does line up with a lot of their technology and social state better than the middle ages.
b) after guns were invented. like after guns as we think of them today are invented. considering dragons are a warfaring species, they would have 100% invented that by now. They could've even been made of metal and readily available, too.
(also even if this isn't a renaissance, a sort of mini-renaissance clearly just happened or is about to happen. like they have doctors who don't kill you more and at least one scientist.)

You know who's underrated? Reed. Clay's brother who was their Bigwings.
Everytime I reread the first arc im surprised he has an actually defined characters unlike Clay's other siblings. He's only in like one chapter and a prolouge but Sutherland was able to make him a character with depth, which is just really impressive. Reed has a small arc where he gets over his insecurity of being his family's bigwings when it should of been Clay and it so sweet how his siblings comfort him.
In short Reed deserves more discussion and attention. ESPECIALLY explorations between him and Clay.

Sup. I’m back again. But this time, with a burning question.
Would Icewings survive in lava?
It sounds crazy at first—but I’m not insane I promise. :’3 okay—maybe I’m a little insane but still.
I recently re-read Starflights book and noticed how he briefly talked about how the fire in firebreathers keeps them warm and probably helped slow Battlewinner’s death. Eventually the frostbreath in BW’s insides starts to win and she throws herself into lava. But instead of dying, she survives. She isn’t set on fire and she’s kept in a kind of stasis with the lava being so hot it temporarily stops the frostbreath from spreading.
And that got me thinking.
If frostbreath is kept like Fire inside of fire-breathing tribes like sandwings and nightwings—would icewings be able to withstand lava? Or would they burn?
Since icewings would probably be even colder on the inside than they are less cold on their outside, would their frostbreath stop them from burning? Or would THEY need to accidentally eat fire to survive the lava? But then wouldn’t they need to stay in the ice?
Summarized version: would icewings survive in lava?
….but not this begs the question of how fireproof scales work. How did Clay’s fireproof scales help him survive the lava?
This is honestly a tough paradox to wrap your head around and honestly a lot of answers would reasonably make sense to me here-
I think because the lava actually fights against Battlewinner’s frostbreath, in normal circumstances the average Icewing would burn to death in lava, maybe leaving more steam than usual behind. It’s implied that most dragons would burn alive- but the frostbreath with Battlewinner is WEIRD and even makes me question my conclusion here. The lava and heat stops the frostbreath from spreading- therefore counteracting it with the heat, and being bad for the frostbreath- but the frostbreath also works with the lava to keep her alive??
Weird, and sort of contradictory? So because of this little thing, although realistically I think the Icewings would just perish, on a more exciting and- somewhat graphic level I believe that the average Icewing would be hanging on for dear life when surviving in the lava.
Their scales and skin would melt off, leaving their protected insides. Due to the heat they are unable to grow back their skin, but due to the coldness of their insides they are left in an almost anatomical model type state, which is TORTUROUS for them and was possibly a torture method utilized by the Nightwings in times of war, keeping their Icewings prisoner and using them for information with promise to be released from their agony. Only to, when released be cursed with their dead skin and scale cells, unable to grow back their outer coat and being vulnerable to more disease and death. Most Icewings after being tortured in this way died, being unable to fly or comfortably walk. Their bodies were prone to disease and bacteria which would be nothing but a minor cold to the average Icewings, but for these prisoners of war leading to their slow and painful deaths. Only one Icewing had been recorded to have survived, being outcasted by the Queen as a traitor, and left for dead by both his home Kingdom and the tribe which tortured him. He used his wit to create protections for himself, and managed to wander the lands with many close calls, eventually making his way to the Rainwing tribe, where they listened to his story and took him in, allowing him a home, food and an environment where he would write political pieces and stories of the tragedy that war had brought. He is one of the greatest pacifist figures in the dragon realm, and is considered by some, a myth. And by the Nightwings, a false figure that was made up to soil their history. The Icewings acknowledge his existence, but claim he was a traitor thru and thru, and only sought to bitterly harm the Icewing Queen for what happened to him in the Night Kingdom. What is often erased from history, is his advocacy for dragons of multiple tribal descents, due to his own hatch being of Rainwing and Icewing descent. The Rainwings seem to be the only tribe who recognizes his true history.
Did I come up with a whole historical figure for this question? Yes I did. I am curious about any thoughts you all have on this little headcanon!
As for firescales, I believe the heat would be simply too much to linger in for long, but they could withstand it for long. I think I recall Clay being able to withstand fire, but he wasn’t entirely invincible? But I haven’t read the books in a while so I’m not sure. There’s definitely legends of Mudwing warriors though during volcanic eruptions, maybe a savior figure of some kind? Far into the past that no dragon is quite sure is real or not.

On the left, Tsunami; Being born with the weight of the world on her shoulders and then choosing to take a position of authority among the 4 others raised for the same destiny would be bad enough, but Tsunami has never done anything by halves. So of course she is also the lost heir of a kingdom with two younger sisters at constant risk of assassination. At least most people are smart enough to listen to her, though.
On the right, Allison Hargreeves; not the oldest child, but definitely the Eldest Daughter. With six siblings, each with trauma as complex and unadressed as the next, she's been raised to use her words and emotions as weapons and leverage. Even as an adult, she often bears the burden of being the most socialized and emotionally intelligent among her siblings (though the bar is on the ground). It's no wonder that when she inevitably cracks, she snaps hard.
Both are no nonsense and self assured characters who refuse to let anyone tell them what to do with their life, but they refuse to let go of any of their siblings, either. They've almost certainly got some big important Thing to get back to, so everyone get voting!
